Topic: The Martinican writer Édouard Glissant passed away ten years ago. Learning from the Caribbean experience, Glissant tried to rethink the world cultural and linguistic exchanges. He defined an alternative to globalization the Whole-World (“Tout-monde”) while emphasizing the specificity of Francophone world literature through the concept of Literature-World (“Littérature-monde”). In particular, Glissant tried to project the Creole space on the European community in order to reimagine its future. European linguistic diversity meets then Creole diversity, and the European Union becomes a complex web of regions, similar to a Caribbean archipelago.

Presenter: Maxime Philippe is an associate professor in the School of Foreign Languages at Shanghai University. He is a specialist of theatre, francophone literature and critical theory. He has published several articles about Antonin Artaud’s work in the A&HCI journalsTheatre Journal,L’Esprit Créateur,Contemporary French and Francophone Studies. Moreover, he has published about Proust inFrench Forum(A&HCI) and ecocriticism in Caribbean literature, also inL’Esprit Créateur.
